The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 100

pop poppa nap cast logo

Hi Gang, welcome to the 100th episode of The Pop Poppa Nap Cast. I have an awesome guest with me this time and it’s my amazing wife Emily! This episode follows a brand new format and I think it’s pretty snazzy! If you want to compare this episode the first one, you can listen to it here.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at the outline we were working on off of the big board:

And this is a picture of what my wife calls a Boyfriend Pillow, but what Target calls a Bed Rest Pillow.

Meanwhile, Bedknobs and Broomsticks is far more entertaining than Babes In Toyland.

bedknobs and broomsticks posterPAW Patrol continues to entertain the kid and, literally the day after recording, I saw that they have another female dog who shows up every now and then called Everest, so that’s something.

paw patrol everestI thought Adventures Time Season 5 was parentally informative, but Em’s still not a big fan of our 4 year old watching it. We’re both not sure about Monster High.

jake the dadBook-wise, I’m a big fan of all three of these, even if Jack thinks books should all have touchscreens. Frozen Fever: Anna’s Birthday Surprise, Joy’s Greatest Joy/Simply Sadness and Oh, The Thinks You Can Think! are aces in my book.

When it comes to toys the Funko Mystery Mini Kyle from Despicable Me 2, DC Collectibles’ Krypto, Doc McStuffins Mobile Cart and the Little Tikes Big Dog Truck have all been big hits in our house.

Unfortunately, these two have seen better days, so I’m going to try cleaning them up with some Clearasil Stayclear Vanishing Acne Cream as suggested on this site. I’ll let you know how it goes.

This week’s Pop Poppa Seal Of Approval goes to Jack’s favorite toy, the Kid O Hide and Seek Discs!

The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 98

pop poppa nap cast logoGood golly it’s been a long time since I did one of these! The 98th episode of The Pop Poppa Nap Cast features some stuff I recorded back in April and then follows it up with an update from this week! It’s not a complete update, but you’ll get the deets on both kids’ birthday parties, the swingset construction and more!

kite day

Guys, first off, Kite Day was more fun than I expected. Kites are rad, even cheapo ones from the drug store (just don’t get those crazy-long tails tangled up).

crawfishSpeaking of rad, crawfish parties are in that same category. I really miss hanging out with my friends, so these get-togethers are super important to me.

Both the Princess Power Barbie doll and DVD get the Pop Poppa Seal of Approval from this guy!

Charlie-and-Lola_0I talked about the Charlie & Lola cartoons back in PPNC #84, but here’s a look at the artwork I mentioned.

Charlie and Lola art sample

Birthdays! Cakes make kids even cuter. It’s a law of nature.

The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 74 recaps the last two weeks, including our trip to New Hampshire (Jack’s first long car ride), a solid house update and a special appearance from this week’s co-host, Lucy.

I should note that when I said I was thinking of going to the store on Tuesday, I said “alone,” but meant “with the kids.”

If you’re in the area, keep an eye out for Tumblebus.

tomboy by liz prince

Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir by Liz Prince is fantastic. A funny, witty, clever and emotional personal story that I think all parents should read. It gives an interesting look behind the curtain of a young woman dealing with gender issues.

Fisher-Price Newborn Rock n' Play Sleeper

I can’t believe I haven’t written about the Fisher-Price Newborn Rock n’ Play Sleeper before here on the blog! It’s a great bed-side sleeper for infants and is also super portable and can be folded up during the day if you’re tight on space like we are. It gets the Pop Poppa Seal of Approval even though I didn’t say it int the episode!

Do your kids like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff and Felicia Bond and Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen? Also, the animated Sendak DVD I mentioned is called Where the Wild Things Are and Other Maurice Sendak Stories.

While talking about the cartoon I can’t remember all the way, I called it Nintendo instead of Nickelodeon. Woops!

Let’s talk Barbie links! Barbie Life In The Dreamhouse can be seen here. It’s also on Netflix Instant. The exact doll Lu got is called the Barbie Bedtime Princess Doll. As you can see, Lu was very happy with hers. Finally, the two movies I talked about are Barbie: A Perfect Christmas and Barbie Fairytopia Magic of the Rainbow. I fully support all but the Fairytopia movie which wound up feeling a lot like the far better Tinkerbell flicks from Disney that are also available on Netflix Instant.

My full review of The Shining is over on UnitedMonkee.com. Its author, Stephen King earned the Pop Poppa Of The Week for his talent.

The Pop Poppa Seal Of Approval went to Marshalls, not because I’m hoping for some advertisers, but because I do dig that store. (I am also looking for advertisers).

The article I mentioned about moms taking it easier on themselves and each other is called “Moms When Are You Going To Learn?” and was posted on So Wonderful, So Marvelous.

My review for The Frighteners can be read over on UnitedMonkee.

The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 27

My apologies for the lack of episode last week and this one’s lateness, but life tends to get in the way of all my internet aspirations. Anyway, the 27th episode of the Pop Poppa Nap Cast runs down our recent vacation to Ipswich, gives an update on our house hunt and gives the Pop Poppa Of The Week to one of my favorite authors!

Tangled is a reimagining of the Rapunzel story. It’s pretty cute, but just about everything loses its cuteness after the 300th viewing.sid the science kid

I thought I’d done a post about my dislike of PBS’ Sid the Science Kid, but apparently I hadn’t. Basically, no other kid show bothers me this much. Even though the general message is “science is cool,” something I completely agree with, it just seems incredibly dumb and filled with one-note characters. Bleh. sesame street

And, finally, Brad Meltzer easily earned the Pop Poppa Of The Week, not just for writing a series of novels I’ve gotten hours of entertainment out of, but also reminding me how important it is to tell your story to the world. “Frustrating” is the word of the day when it comes to The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 20 thanks to a disinterest in swim class, even less in potty training and a strong desire to wake up at 7AM every morning.

The swimmie thing I mentioned is actually the Stearns Deluxe Puddle Jumper 30-50 lbs. Unlike the one pictured in that link, Lu’s has a zebra on it.

I wrote about why we decided to use reusable diapers here, the newborn ones here, the ones we still use here and the wipes set-up here. Head on over to the Bum Genius website for more information on what they’ve got going on these days. The new detergent we’re using for the diapers is called Rockin’ Green. The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 10 – FIXED!

pop poppa nap cast logo

I’m really sorry about the janky version of this episode that went out. I was in a rush pre-vacation and didn’t check to make sure it was the way it should be. Here it is as originally intended!

In this episode we prepare for Disney World while also talking about a super fun party with friends, the waning days of Wizard and how that experience has helped me refrain my bad days now. Oh, and fun with baby talk!

I was actually right that a pidgin is a combination of two languages! I know this because I looked it up on Wikipedia!

The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 8

As the weather goes from great to grey, I talk about everything from nice weather memories and Mariah Carey to Mickey Mouse coloring books and how the movie Spring Break holds up as a good lesson on how to be a worthwhile person.

If you missed it, here are a pair of Photo Diary posts about us going to the park from Friday and Tuesday.

Here’s my wildly uninformed Sesame Street post from last year.

The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 7

The latest installment of The Pop Poppa Nap Cast focuses on a recent trip to New Hampshire for Easter, the many cartoons I want to share with my daughter and a big thumbs up for a new sitcom and my favorite diaper bag.

The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 7

The episode of The Big Bang Theory I mentioned that inspired Lu to sing “Soft Kitty” is called “The Adhesive Duck Deficiency.” I live blogged it back in 2009.

You can check out the piece my friend Sean Collins wrote about He-Man over on Vorpalizer.

While I’m linking to my pals, here’s the piece my buddy Rob Bricken wrote about the wacky He-Man/She-Ra holiday special that he wrote for io9.

As I mentioned in the episode, I’m trying something new with a little bit of advertising. If you’re interested in any of the products or DVDs I mentioned in the show follow these links to Amazon. It’ll help the show for sure, so thanks in advance. Alright gang, it’s finally here, the very first episode of something I’ve been thinking about for a while and working on for a few weeks now. There’s been plenty of starts and stops and the final product is far from perfect, but I think I finally hit something of a good stride and hope it gets better week in and week out.

So here’s the deal, if you’re looking to just keep this page and listen to the podcast, click the following link and hit the play button. If you want to save the file to your computer, click the link, right click and select “Save Video As.” I know it’s not a video, but that will download the MP3 file to your desktop. I’m working on getting the podcast searchable on iTunes right now, but you can copy this link: https://poppoppa.com/category/podcasts/feed/ into the Subscribe to Podcast option in the File drop down menu of your iTunes. Give it a whirl, see how it plays.

Pop Poppa Recommended Watching: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

When it comes to cartoons aimed at babies/infants/children, some can be absolutely dreadful. However, I’ve found a few good ones while channel surfing with Lu. One of the better examples happens to be Disney’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse which follows the usual gang of Disney characters as they come together to solve problems. Lu’s a big fan of the series too, which is fun because I loved the Disney Channel as a kid (back when it was a pay channel!) and my wife and dad are both big Disney fans overall, so she comes by it honestly.

And, for the most part, Clubhouse is actually pretty entertaining. I used to watch all the old shorts and whatnot on Disney Channel — some of which are still shown between modern shows, which is pretty cool — so it’s fun to hear the voices and see the characters done up in CGI. The episodes revolve around the gang solving a problem in or around Mickey’s awesome clubhouse with the help of the audience (not really) and Toodles, a floating Mickey-shaped device from the future that teleports one of four per-designated items (three shown and one a mystery) to help in the exploits.

My one problem with the show is that, I wonder if it might actually decrease a child’s resourcefulness. When they get to a particular sticking point, Mickey’s like, “Toodles, what tools can we use to do this job?” and he presents the options. Once one is used, it can’t be used again, but that’s not usually a problem because they’re very specific anyway. As it is, the show presents something of a logic matching game puzzle, this thing solves that problem, basically. But, there’s lots of different ways to solve problems and we don’t have floating teleporters in our lives (yet).

But that’s probably just me overthinking things. I can always be like, “Hey Lu, what OTHER ways can you think of to get an elephant out of a tree?” and we can make a game out of it, help her spread those critical thinking wings as early as possible. Now I just need to remember to do that…
