Last weekend I found myself unexpectedly sitting in a theater watching Smurfs: The Lost Village. My daughter had been invited to one of her kindergarten classmates’ birthday party and I went along, thinking that I would simply drop her off and maybe hang around for the food-and-cake portion. Instead, on the way there, she asked if I could stay and I didn’t really have anything better to do, so I stayed. Continue reading
Good golly it’s been a long time since I did one of these! The 98th episode of The Pop Poppa Nap Cast features some stuff I recorded back in April and then follows it up with an update from this week! It’s not a complete update, but you’ll get the deets on both kids’ birthday parties, the swingset construction and more!
Guys, first off, Kite Day was more fun than I expected. Kites are rad, even cheapo ones from the drug store (just don’t get those crazy-long tails tangled up).
I talked about the Charlie & Lola cartoons back in PPNC #84, but here’s a look at the artwork I mentioned.

Birthdays! Cakes make kids even cuter. It’s a law of nature.
Here‘s the list of tips I came up with for throwing a solid pre-schooler birthday party. It’s pretty much the best thing you’ll read all day.
And finally, behold the glory of a more organized garage!
A few weeks back we celebrated our daughter’s fourth birthday with a lot of her friends from school. I don’t mind saying that it was a huge success and I take basically no responsibility for that. My wife was the mastermind behind the festivities from invitations to decorations and games, but she doesn’t have a blog and I do, so I’m the one who’s going to throw down some advice. The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 86 covers Christmas, sickness, sleep and Sh-Ra with a surprise appearance by Lucy!
For more information on Watts Christmas Wonderland, check out their site. Above you can see a shaky shot of the light-filled neighborhood we discovered and the solid Santa at the Newburgh Mall.
My First Disney Princess Frozen Snow Glow Elsa Singing Doll was a big hit with Lu. She also got Frozen stickers, jammies, jelly beans, slippers and more.
Above you can see She-Ra – Princess of Power – Season One, Vol. 1 as well as Lu brandishing her paper roll She-Ra sword!
The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 76 kicks off a new weekly release schedule, gives an update on the house stuff and chronicles Lu’s first kinda-sorta first day of school.
Tom by Tomie dePaolo is a pretty weird book that creeps me out, but my kid loves it.
Over the Hedge and My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Spooktacular Pony Tales both get the thumb’s up from Lu and the Pop Poppa Seal Of Approval from me. If you’re interested in my original thoughts on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, check them out here. The MLP movie I mentioned that’s on Netflix is called .
The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 68 covers further adventures with the kids while my wife returns to work, a new book review and a huge, life changing announcement. Sorry about the background noise, it’s way too hot here to turn the AC off for recording.
If you cook, you should definitely start your own Big Blue Binder (choose any colour you like).
Here’s Lu and Danny, formerly Annie, playing with the Fisher-Price Farm House.
The episode of The Simpsons with the Finding Nemo-based plot point is called “Homer Scissorhands.”
I wasn’t kidding around when I said you see Tarzan’s dead parents in the Disney animated version. That movie is DARK.
The current version of Arthur’s Eyes by Marc Brown is available on Amazon. I have no idea if the interiors have been re-drawn or not, but the cover clearly has.
In The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 65 I talk about our Father’s Day weekend, extol the virtues of our library system and go on and on about my comic book fandom, all ages books and the movies from my childhood they remind me of.
To see the Hot Mess dish I mentioned from Handsome Devil, head on over to Monkeying Around The Kitchen.
For Father’s Day I scored the Wusic Bluetooth Wireless Speaker and the Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy [Blu-ray]. I’m so jazzed about both.
If you’re looking for an RSS feed reader, I’m a pretty big fan of Feedly.
For more of my thoughts on E.T. and Cloak & Dagger, follow their respective links. This reminds me that I really need to review The Goonies. I recently read a book called Finding Gossamyr that fits in with these movies along with more fanastical ones like Labyrinth.
The Pop Poppa Nap Cast Episode 64 goes over the recent wave of sickness sweeping through our house, a parent-enabled friend party and a few ways I’m trying to reframe how I think about work and get organized for my wife’s inevitable return to work.
